A violent crime has struck a typically peaceful part of the city. On the night of June 6, 2016, a woman was found fatally shot in the head in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The victim was found just after sundown on a sidewalk in the park near the intersection of Joralemon and Furman Streets, near her place of work. According to the NY Post, the victim had been threatened by her ex-boyfriend and had filed a protection order against him. No arrests have yet been made.

In Brooklyn Heights, this apparent murder is especially shocking, with NYPD CompStat data showing only one previous murder in the 89th Precinct within the past year, but the incident comes only one day after a body was pulled from the East River at nearby Pier 5. Another area of recent contention only steps to the north has been Pier 2, which residents have cited as being a site of large fights and a congregation point for dangerous behavior.
